Stakeholder and governance processes at regional transmission organizations—private, mostly nonprofit, companies—are often structured around the interests of incumbent generators and others financially benefitting from the status quo. The result? Rules that undermine market priorities, policies that favor and protect incumbent fossil generation, and barriers to cleaner energy. The Sustainable FERC Project seeks to improve stakeholder and governance processes in ways that gain more voting power and representation for states, consumer and public interest advocates, and representatives of new technologies.
Among our priorities for governance reform are:
- Transparent and accountable decisionmaking.
- Inclusive and open RTO membership.
- Fair voting structures and other improvements to governance.
